UpToMap · Last updated 13 July 2026
UpToMap (“we”, “us”) is a location-based social map: you drop places on a map, add photos and short descriptions, chat about them, and see places that may interest you. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have. If you do not agree with it, please do not use UpToMap.
Controller: UpToMap. Contact: [email protected].
1. Information we collect
Information you provide
- Account details — when you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and Google profile picture.
- Places and content — the locations you create (their coordinates and address), the photos you upload, and short descriptions.
- Messages — the content of location chats and direct messages you send.
- Profile photo — an avatar image, if you add one.
- Feedback — when you mark a place as relevant or not, or verify a place.
Information collected automatically
- Location— with your permission, your device’s precise location, to show your position on the map, place new locations, and surface nearby places. The map area you are viewing is used to load places and points of interest for that area.
- Device push token — a Firebase Cloud Messaging token so we can send you notifications (e.g. a message on your place or a direct message). You can turn notifications off at any time.
- Usage data — your searches and interactions within the app, used to operate and personalise the service.
Information created by AI
To make the map useful, we use AI to analyse the photos and text you submit and to build a lightweight interest profile that personalises what you see:
- Photos and descriptions of places are turned into a short public summary and tags describing the place.
- Your searches, the places you like, and your profile picture are distilled into interest tags that help rank which places to show you.
- We deliberately focus on general interests and context and do not build a biometric identity from your photos.
2. How we use your information
- Provide and operate the map and its social features (places, photos, chats, direct messages).
- Show you your location and personalise which places are surfaced to you.
- Send notifications you have enabled.
- Keep the service safe: moderate content and prevent abuse.
- Maintain, debug and improve the service.
3. Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with service providers that process it on our behalf to make the app work:
| Provider | Purpose | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Google (Sign-In, Firebase Cloud Messaging, Gemini AI) | Authentication, push notifications, AI analysis of your photos and text | Account identifiers, push token, submitted photos and text |
| OpenAI | AI analysis (used as a fallback for the above) | Submitted photos and text |
| OpenStreetMap / Overpass / OpenFreeMap | Map tiles and public points of interest | The map area / coordinates being viewed |
| Nominatim (OpenStreetMap) | Turning place names into coordinates | Search text for a place |
| DigitalOcean | Hosting and image storage | All data needed to run the service, including uploaded images |
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety and property of UpToMap and its users.
4. Data retention
- Account information is kept while your account is active.
- Places you create expire automatically after a set period (by default about 3 days) unless renewed.
- You can delete places, photos and your account at any time. Deleting your account removes your personal data from our active systems, except where we must retain limited data to comply with the law.
5. Your rights and choices
- Access, correction, deletion — you can view and edit your profile and content in the app, and delete your account.
- Location — you control location access through your device settings; without it, map features are limited.
- Notifications — you can disable push notifications in the app or your device settings.
- To exercise any right, or to request deletion, contact [email protected].
6. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS). No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
7. Children
UpToMap is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
8. International transfers
Your information may be processed on servers and by service providers located in countries other than your own, which may have different data-protection laws. Where required, we take steps to ensure your data remains protected.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will change the “Last updated” date above and, for material changes, provide a more prominent notice.
10. Contact
